The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) has accredited the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential as a professional qualification. Over 25,000 professionals have earned their CSP certification throughout the more than 40 years that the credential has been in use.
Duties of CSPs
A CSP is someone who, at minimum, fifty percent of the time, carries out professional-level safety obligations. These responsibilities include risk assessment of the worksite, evaluation of potential hazards and controls, risk assessment and hazard control methods, incident investigation, incident and loss record maintenance and evaluation, and emergency response plan preparation.
Hazard recognition, fire safety, ergonomics, health hazard control, regulatory compliance, hazardous materials management, environmental protection, training, accident and incident, investigations, record keeping, emergency response, managing safety programs, product safety, and/or security are some of the additional responsibilities that CSPs may have.
Who is eligible for CSP?
A college degree plus 35 hours of approved pre-requisite coursework in sales that is in line with the framework for sales professionals. Four years minimum of independently verified experience handling customer accounts. All CSP candidates are required to possess one of the following qualifications at the time of application:
- Professional in Associate Safety (ASP)
- Professional in Graduate Safety (GSP)
- Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Professional in Safety Registration in Canada (CRSP)
- Professional Member of the Safety Officers’ Association of Singapore (SISO)
- Government of India Industrial Safety Diploma

Apply online. Anytime you visit a BCSP.ORG website, you can apply for certification by clicking the My Profile gateway in the right-hand corner. Enroll online now to take the CSP (Certified Safety Professional) exam. Pass the CSP the first time around.
After it is submitted, your application will be reviewed by BCSP. To be qualified for the certification, you have to fulfill all of the prerequisites. Candidates have one (1) year from the time of eligibility determination to take and pass the certification exam.
Cost of CSP exam
Following the approval of your application which cost $160, you have one (1) year to purchase and take the test. Following the approval of your CSP application, you can purchase the $350 CSP examination fee.
Purchasing an exam can be done by going into My Profile and clicking the “Purchase Exam” menu option. An authorization code will be sent to you through email, which you can use to make an exam appointment at a Pearson VUE testing facility. As long as it has been six (6) weeks after your last exam attempt, you are free to schedule the exam at any time.
