Duties of CRSTs

The operational health and safety systems developed by Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSPs) are supported and implemented by CRSTs. In order to evaluate and track risks and eventually boost production, CRSTs employ the customized and adopted instruments that CRSPs have authorized.

These responsibilities include risk assessment of the worksite, evaluation of potential hazards and controls, risk assessment and hazard control methods, incident investigation, incident and loss record maintenance and evaluation, and emergency response plan preparation.

Who is eligible for CRST?

Pathway A:
  • Formal Education Requirement: Have successfully completed a one-year OHS certificate program from a recognized educational institution.
  • Technical Practice: Have had at least twelve months of OHS work experience (at least 35% OHS duties) immediately before submitting an application. OHS experience must be 12 months within the last 24 months as validated by the QRC.
Pathway B:
  • Formal Education Requirement: Have successfully completed a two-year non-OHS formal education program from a recognized educational institution (Community College or University) OR is qualified to journeyman status in a trade.
  • Technical Skills Development: Have completed professional development courses or training related to the CRST Examination Blueprint competency categories before submitting an application.
  • Technical Practice: Have had a minimum of twelve months OHS work experience (at least 35% OHS duties) immediately before submitting an application. OHS experience must be 12 months within the last 24 months as validated by the QRC.
Path C – For Graduates of Recognized OHS Programs
  • Formal Education Requirement: Graduates from an approved OHS program from a recognized educational institution are eligible to write the Technician Certification examination immediately upon graduation, and if successful hold the Technician level certification. The program must be on the approved list published by BCRSP. Applications under this pathway must be received within 12 months of graduation. 
  • Upon obtaining 4 years of relevant OHS experience at a professional level, and having maintained a CRST certification in good standing, will be eligible to apply for the CRSP certification. 

*a two-year diploma or certificate program is approximately 900 hours or 60 credit hours.

CRST exam registration

Your application will be evaluated by BCRSP after it is submitted. You must meet all requirements in order to be eligible for the certification. After their eligibility is determined, candidates have one (1) years to take and pass the certification exam.

For applicants whose first language is neither English nor French. They will be required to submit documentation verifying proof of language proficiency.

Cost of CRST exam

Following the approval of your application which cost $525, you have one (1) year to purchase and take the test. The application cost is $75 if the applicant is using one of the Memorandum of Understanding application channels. Following the approval of your CRST application, each exam attempt will cost $175 for registration as well as approximately $170 for exam centre fees. And also, $300 certification fee.

Purchasing an exam can be done by going into My Profile and clicking the “Purchase Exam” menu option. An authorization code will be sent to you through email, which you can use to make an exam appointment at a Pearson VUE testing facility. Candidates who fail the first writing of the examination are permitted up to two supplementary writings over the next 12 months (within the prescribed windows)
